What Is CharCap?

CharCap is a free, real-time character counter that shows how your text measures up against the character limits of every major social media platform. Paste your draft and instantly see color-coded progress bars for Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, SMS, and more — all at the same time, with no sign-up required.

Instead of writing in one platform's composer and then copying across, CharCap lets you write once and immediately see which platforms you're within, approaching, or over the limit for. It's built for content creators, social media managers, copywriters, and SEO professionals who publish across multiple channels.

Why Character Limits Matter

Every platform enforces strict character limits on posts, captions, titles, and bios. Go over and your content gets cut off mid-sentence or rejected outright. Stay too far under and you leave valuable context, keywords, or calls-to-action on the table.

Character limits also affect visibility: LinkedIn's feed shows only the first ~210 characters before "See more," Twitter/X truncates at 280, and Google's search snippets cut off meta descriptions past 160 characters. Writing to these thresholds — not just under the hard cap — is the difference between content that gets read and content that gets ignored.

How to Use CharCap

  1. Type or paste your text into the editor on the left. The character count, word count, sentence count, and estimated reading time update instantly.
  2. Watch the platform grid on the right. Each platform card shows a progress bar: green means you're well within the limit, yellow means you're approaching it, and red means you've exceeded it.
  3. Filter by category using the tabs above the grid — Social, SEO, Messaging, and more — to focus on the platforms relevant to your task.
  4. Check soft limits — small tick marks on the progress bar indicate a recommended length (e.g. where a platform's feed truncates). Try to keep important content before these marks.
  5. Edit and compare — adjust your text and see all platform statuses update in real time so you can find the version that works across the most channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CharCap count characters or bytes?

Characters. Each letter, number, space, and punctuation mark counts as one character. Emoji typically count as 2 characters on Twitter/X because of how the platform handles Unicode code points above U+FFFF.

Does Twitter count URLs differently?

Yes. Twitter wraps every URL in a t.co short link, and all t.co links count as exactly 23 characters regardless of the original URL length. CharCap shows raw character counts, so subtract the difference manually when your post includes links.

What is a "recommended" or "soft" limit?

Many platforms have a hard limit (the maximum you can submit) and a soft limit (where the text gets visually truncated in the feed). For example, LinkedIn allows 3,000 characters but shows only the first ~210 before "See more." CharCap marks soft limits with a tick on the progress bar so you know where meaningful truncation happens.

Is my text stored or sent to a server?

No. All character counting and processing runs entirely in your browser via JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to any server, stored in any database, or logged anywhere.

How is reading time calculated?

Based on the average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute, which is a commonly cited research benchmark for on-screen reading. Divide your word count by 238 to get the estimated minutes.

Does CharCap support languages other than English?

Yes. Character counting works for any language — the tool counts Unicode characters, not just ASCII. Note that CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) characters are single characters but often count as more than one toward platform limits depending on the platform's own encoding rules.

Why does my Instagram caption show red at 2,200 characters?

2,200 is Instagram's hard limit for caption length. The platform will reject captions longer than this. Note that hashtags count toward the character total, and Instagram also has a separate limit of 30 hashtags per post regardless of character count.

Is CharCap free?

Yes, completely free. No subscription, no account, no usage limits. Open the page and start counting.
